The president in charge of VenezuelaDelcy Rodríguez, confirmed this Thursday 164 dead and 971 injured due to the two powerful earthquakes that shook his country this Wednesday, where he assured that 30 aftershocks have been recorded in the last hours.
“At the moment, the number we have already registered is 164 deaths, 971 injured, with 30 aftershocks that have occurred since the two consecutive main events that we had at six in the afternoon (on Wednesday)” stated the president in a telephone contact with the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
Likewise, reported that a fund of 200 million dollars has been created for the reconstruction of the affected areas, where in the early hours of this Thursday the search for survivors in the rubble continues.
Rodríguez confirmed that La Guaira, a coastal state in the north of the country and neighbor to Caracas, is the state most affected by the earthquakes, and indicated that it has been declared a “natural disaster zone due to the number of buildings that collapsed,” the number of which was not immediately specified.
The two strong earthquakes occurred around 18:05 local time on Wednesday (22:05 GMT) with the most powerful, measuring 7.5, occurring just 39 seconds after the first, measuring 7.2, reported the official US tsunami warning system, which explained that they formed a phenomenon called a “seismic doublet” and later canceled the tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Both had their epicenter less than 30 kilometers southeast of the city of yumarein the state of Yaracuy -whose capital is Saint Philip-, according to the US Geological Survey, which measures seismic activity around the world. Caracas It is about 300 kilometers east of Yumare, where the earthquakes were also felt.
US President Donald Trump offered help to Venezuela in a comment on his network, Truth Social, and anticipated that the first reports about its consequences “are not good” and that “they have left a devastating number of deaths.”
“We are currently declaring a state of emergency, as contemplated in our Constitution”said Delcy Rodríguez in a first speech on VTV, before reporting the number of victims, accompanied by the president of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, and the Minister of the Interior and Justice, Diosdado Cabello.
He also indicated that the country’s entire public and private health network has been activated and announced that there will be no classes “in the following days” of this week, as well as the suspension of all activities that are not essential services.
The president pointed out that there were building collapses in several areas of Caracas, as well as impacts in the states of Miranda, La Guaira, Falcón and Carabobo, and reported that the Maiquetía International Airport, which serves Caracas, was closed after suffering serious damage to its infrastructure, without specifying what.
Before Rodríguez offered the first report of deaths and injuries, the mayor of the Caracas municipality of Chacao, Gustavo Duque, warned of possible deaths in his jurisdiction.
“We are focused on trying to rescue the largest number of residents alive,” the official told journalists in the midst of the rescue efforts of residents of two collapsed buildings, describing the situation as “very hard” for his municipality, in the metropolitan area of Caracas.
For its part, the US Geological Survey estimated that there is around a 40% probability that the earthquakes caused between 10,000 and 100,000 deaths, a projection calculated from the intensity of the movement, the exposed population and the vulnerability of the buildings in the affected area.
Thousands of people gathered this Wednesday night in the streets of Caracas after earthquakes that have left numerous buildings collapsed and facades with cracks, EFE was able to confirm. In the Los Palos Grandes neighborhood, in the east of the Venezuelan capital, hundreds of people remained around two collapsed buildings.
Meanwhile, neighbors and Civil Protection and Police officials from the municipality of Chacao (in the metropolitan district of Caracas) are trying to find survivors without machinery: “There are living people, we need tobos (buckets) to load and move the debris. There are living people,” say locals.
Apart from Trump, leaders from Brazil, Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Mexico and Cuba, among other nations, expressed their solidarity with Venezuela after the strong earthquakes.
The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed his “concern and dismay” about the effects of the earthquakes and assured that his Government is evaluating assistance measures to support the Caribbean country in addressing the emergency.
“All my solidarity with the brother people of Venezuela,” the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, wrote in
The president in charge of Venezuela thanked the support of the countries that “communicated with Venezuela to offer solidarity,” in a message broadcast by VTV.
