Fars Agency: Iran needs nuclear weapons

The Iranian news agency Fars, the mouthpiece of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, published an editorial arguing that in the current situation Iran has no choice but to become the owner of nuclear weapons.

In order to ensure the peace, security and tranquility that our country needs, it is necessary to achieve nuclear deterrence. Then the remaining issues can be resolved through negotiations,” the publication says.

Fars compares the situation to US-China relations during the Cold War: “America twice threatened China with nuclear weapons – just as Trump threatened us. And when did Kissinger begin negotiations with the Chinese? When they created the atomic bomb.”

“Nuclear deterrence will ensure a balance of power with America and Israel, which have the atomic bomb. This does not mean that there will be no war. But it does mean that the scale of the conflict will remain controlled,” the article states.

According to numerous statements by the Iranian leadership, the Islamic Republic does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons. At the same time, the Western intelligence community, including the Israeli one, does not doubt the military nature of the developments.

A memorandum of understanding signed by the presidents of the United States and Iran declares the ayatollah regime’s renunciation of possessing nuclear weapons.
