Berlin plans to demolish Hitler’s last remaining bunker

They want to build an office building and a seven-story residential building on the site of the bunker. TageSpiegel quotes Berlin’s building senator Christian Gebler, a member of the Social Democrats, as opposing the preservation of the site, which could become a site of pilgrimage.

At the same time, the Berlin Dungeons association advocates for the preservation of the historical monument. “To destroy one of the last evidence of the center of Nazi power is simply madness. We have already shown that it is possible to build while preserving monuments,” says the head of the Berlin Dungeons association, Dietmar Arnold.

The Federal Office for the Protection of Historical Monuments calls the bunker “an object of significant historical and scientific significance.” However, the authorities of the Berlin capital, despite recommendations, refuse to include it in the list of protected sites.”

At the same time, back in March 2025, the department prepared a report in which it recommended to reconsider this position. “This is part of the complex where World War II was planned and a symbol of the catastrophic collapse of the Nazi regime,” the document noted.

It should be noted that this is not the bunker in which Hitler spent his last days and committed suicide. That one was demolished long ago, and in its place there is a parking lot.
