Belarus releases 28 political prisoners

According to authorities, 28 political prisoners have been pardoned in Belarus. A total of 32 people were released from prison before Independence Day, the Belarusian presidency announced on Wednesday. 28 of them were in prison for “extremist crimes” – this is the wording the government in Belarus uses to refer to political prisoners. It was said that ruler Alexander Lukashenko had signed a corresponding decree.

It was also reported that 20 women and twelve men were released. Since 2025 in Belarus after negotiations led by US President Donald Trump Hundreds of political prisoners were released. In return, the USA relaxed its sanctions against the country allied with Russia.

The government of long-time ruler Lukashenko is taking tough action against critical voices. According to the human rights organization Vyasna, more than 800 people remain in prison in Belarus for political reasons. Many of them were arrested during the protests against Lukashenko’s controversial re-election in 2020.
