Ukraine destroys Russian fighter jets at airfield in Crimea

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported this Friday (3) that it carried out a new attack against the Saki airfield, on the Crimean peninsula, in which up to seven Russian Su-30SM, Su-30 and Su-24 fighter planes were destroyed or at least damaged.

According to information from the EFE agency, the Ukrainian spy service reported in a statement that it had hit seven hangars at the Saki military airfield with attack drones, which had already been the target of another Ukrainian attack this week.

In addition, the SBU also attacked the Gvardiski military airfield, also in Crimea, in the early hours of Friday, where, according to the Ukrainian intelligence service, a Shahed drone depot was hit.

These actions occurred one day after Russia carried out one of the deadliest attacks this year in the war between the two countries: several Ukrainian regions were attacked with missiles and drones in the early hours of Thursday (2), an offensive that killed at least 30 people and left around a hundred injured in the capital region, Kiev.

Russia’s strong attacks in recent months are a response to recent gains by the Ukrainians in the war that began in February 2022: the Russians have lost more territory than they have conquered, face difficulties in replacing the losses they suffer on the battlefield and have seen Ukrainian attacks compromise their ability to produce and export oil.

Ukraine has been carrying out a campaign of attacks for weeks against military targets, bridges and other logistical and energy infrastructure in Crimea and the southern territories of mainland Ukraine occupied by Russia, with the aim of isolating Kremlin troops located in these areas.

Such attacks have caused fuel shortages and widespread blackouts in Crimea, which is part of Ukraine but has been occupied by Russians since 2014.
