Lebanese President in the White House: “Our goal is to end the hostility with Israel”

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with US President Donald Trump on June 21 at the White House. The main issues on the agenda of the negotiations are the disarmament of the Hezbollah terrorist group and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon.

“Our goal is to put an end to the hostile relationship with Israel once and for all. I believe, Mr. President, this will be your legacy. The time has come for the Middle East to become peaceful and stable. I am confident that we will achieve this goal,” Aoun said.

President Trump expressed confidence that other countries will join the Abraham Accords. He also stated that if his interlocutor asks about it, he will be ready to conduct a dialogue with Hezbollah himself. He also threatened Iran with new attacks, including on underground nuclear infrastructure facilities.

Aoun became the first Lebanese president invited to Washington since 2009. The irreconcilable enemy of the Shiite terrorist group must present Trump with a plan for its disarmament, but the Lebanese central authorities are not able to solve this problem on their own.

The Lebanese army began deploying on July 21 in one of the so-called “pilot zones” in the south of the country, previously under the control of Israeli troops. This was reported by the AFP agency, citing a source in military circles.

According to the source, the military personnel “began deployment to the village of Zoutar al-Gharbiya” in the Nabatiyeh district after the withdrawal of Israeli troops from there.

Let us remind you that on the evening of Monday, July 20, the IDF officially confirmed the start of the Safe Space pilot project in southern Lebanon. A statement from the army press service emphasizes that the project was launched at the direction of the Israeli political leadership and is being carried out jointly with the US Army Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Lebanese army.
