Egypt seeks to prevent the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas

Egypt is working with the United States and regional partners to accelerate the deployment of an international stabilization force in Gaza in an attempt to prevent the collapse of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, according to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.

According to the report, citing informed sources, Cairo hopes the international force will “create a new reality” for security in the Strip while simultaneously supporting the National Governance Committee for the Gaza Strip.

The newspaper notes that recent discussions have focused on establishing a “pilot zone” in Rafah, where displaced Palestinians will be housed in caravans. This is consistent with statements made earlier this month by officials from the “peace council.”

The newspaper also reports that Egypt has begun constructing new military towers and facilities near its border with the Gaza Strip to support the possible deployment of an international force.
