The US Department of Justice admitted in a court document on Friday that the damage to the historic water basin at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington was caused by poor work by the contractor hired for the renovation. The department plans to drop its charges against a former U.S. Olympian for vandalism at the newly renovated Reflecting Pool, according to court documents
The historic pool was drained and redesigned this year as part of US President Donald Trump‘s plans to transform the US capital as part of a $14.7 million (12.2 million euros) no-tender contract. Trump’s decision sparked discussions. On June 6th, the US President announced that the work had been completed.
But less than two weeks later, the fresh paint in the pool was peeling off the bottom and spreading throughout the pool. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed vandalism for the damage to the pool without providing any evidence.
