THE HEAT IS NOT LETTING GO Red alert will remain in effect for days, temperatures almost up to 40 °C

The heat wave that has gripped all of Croatia is at its peak, with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius in some cities this afternoon. The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has issued the highest, red and orange, warnings for almost the entire country due to the extremely hot weather that poses a great danger to the health of citizens.

Temperatures above 38 degrees throughout the country

According to DHMZ data, extremely high temperatures were recorded at 4 p.m., confirming the strength of the heat wave. The hottest was Knin, where the thermometer rose to 38.3 °C. Only slightly lower temperatures were recorded at Rijeka Airport with 38.2 °C and at Zadar Airport, where it was exactly 38 °C. The heat did not bypass the interior, so 37.6 °C was measured in Daruvar, 37.5 °C in Slavonski Brod, and 37.0 °C in Osijek. High temperatures were also recorded in Bilogora (36.9 °C) and in Zagreb, where 35.9 °C was measured at the Maksimir station. It was 35.4 °C in Pula, 34.7 °C at Split Airport, and 33 °C in Dubrovnik.

Due to the extreme heat, the DHMZ has activated a red weather alert, which indicates very dangerous weather, for areas of the Zagreb, Knin, Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions. An orange warning, which also implies dangerous weather conditions, is in force for the Osijek, Karlovac and Gospic regions.

Experts are urging citizens to take precautions and take the warnings seriously. It is advised to avoid being in the sun during the hottest part of the day, from 10 am to 5 pm, to drink plenty of fluids and to avoid heavy physical exertion. Such conditions are particularly dangerous for chronically ill people, young children and the elderly and can cause difficulties in energy supply.

The scorching heat will continue in the coming days

According to the forecast, relief from the heat will not come anytime soon. Sunny and very hot weather will continue throughout the weekend and early next week. The DHMZ predicts that the highest daily air temperatures in most areas will range between 33 and 39 °C. Nights will also be very warm, especially on the Adriatic, where temperatures will not drop below 24 degrees Celsius.

The red alert will remain in force for the south of the country throughout Sunday, and from Monday it will also be extended to the Zagreb area. A particularly long-term danger is predicted for the Rijeka region, where exceptionally high temperatures could last until the middle of next week.
