Several branches in Berlin and Brandenburg are closing: Bakery chain Wahl files for insolvency.

The Wahl bakery chain from Bestensee, which most recently operated more than 50 branches in Berlin and Brandenburg, has filed for insolvency. This was reported by the “Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung” (MAZ), citing managing director Anett Wahl. She cited rising prices and customer reluctance to buy as the reasons for the move. According to the report, several branches are to be closed – the company has not yet announced how many or which ones.

The MAZ reports that the branch located in a Rewe supermarket in the Schmöckwitz district of Berlin’s Treptow-Köpenick borough will close on August 1st. Two branches in Potsdam will also cease operations, as will branches in Ludwigsfelde and Trebbin.

Nine locations in East Berlin

The Wahl bakery chain most recently operated nine locations in Berlin, all situated in the eastern part of the city. With 17 branches, the chain has its strongest presence in the Dahme-Spreewald district of Brandenburg.

Despite the insolvency, the company told the MAZ that “the core business of the Wahl bakery is healthy and competitive.” The business will continue operating without restrictions while downsizing.

According to the company, the first Wahl bakery branch opened in 1978. The family-run business employs more than 400 people – how many jobs will be affected by the closures is not yet known.

The fact that Wahl bakery has filed for insolvency under self-administration means that the management remains in office. Instead of an insolvency administrator, only a trustee will be appointed to oversee the insolvency proceedings. (Tsp)
