María Corina Machado confirms support for Urrutia to face Maduro

The leader of the opposition in Venezuela, María Corina Machado, announced on Saturday night (20) her support for candidate Edmundo González Urrutia to face dictator Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela’s presidential elections in July. He was chosen after María Corina became ineligible by decision of the Supreme Court of Justice.

The 76-year-old diplomat was confirmed on Friday (19) “unanimously” after the withdrawal of Manuel Rosales, governor of the oil state of Zulia, who had been nominated by Um Novo Tempo (UNT), a member of the Democratic Unitary Platform. (PUD).

“We are united and strong,” said Corina in a video published on social media. “We are already on the ballot and we have a candidate who was supported by all political parties and good citizens,” he added. Corina’s support was considered essential for an opposition ticket to advance in the electoral dispute.

The PUD registered González as a “provisional candidate” for President at the last minute, after Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) barred the registration of Corina Yoris, nominated by Corina Machado as her replacement.

Still on Saturday, Urrutia spoke to confirm the candidacy. “I accept the immense honor and responsibility of being the candidate of all those who want change through electoral means,” he said on his social networks.
