The Russian ambassador to Armenia was summoned to Moscow for consultations

On May 24, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin was summoned to Moscow for consultations, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said.

Details are not reported.

Armenia’s relations with Russia and the CSTO have worsened, this happened especially after the attack of Azerbaijan in September 2022. Despite Yerevan’s demands, the CSTO has not yet condemned the attack against Armenia, a member of the alliance, and has not recorded that Azerbaijan has occupied territories from Armenia.

In response, Yerevan rejected the proposal to deploy CSTO observers on the border, and in 2024, Prime Minister Pashinyan announced that Yerevan’s membership in the bloc was de facto frozen, and did not rule out that Armenia could leave the bloc.

Also this month, President Putin’s spokesperson confirmed that during the meeting of the leaders of Armenia and Russia on May 8 in Moscow, the withdrawal of Russian soldiers and border guards from a number of regions of Armenia was agreed upon. Russian border guards will continue to stay at the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian borders.
