A major power plant is closing down in Finland – Something completely new to replace it

Fortum closes and dismantles its Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant permanently.

According to Fortum’s press release, the Tahkoluoto area of ​​Pori will be developed into a nationally important clean transition industrial area, where low-carbon growth will be created in Finland. Pori city council has approved a partial master plan, which creates the conditions for changes in the area.

The Meri-Pori coal-fired power plant has been in use by the Service Safety Center since March 2024. During this time, the plant has not produced electricity for anything other than test use. The contract with Huoltovarmuuskeskus expires at the end of 2026.

In winter, the power plant returns to the electricity market before the final shutdown. Huoltovarmuuskeskus is preparing arrangements by which electricity production reserves can be procured from elsewhere.

The Meri-Pori power plant has been used by the Maintenance Safety Center in case of serious crisis and disruption situations, if problems occur in the electrical system. The power plant has not been on the electricity market during the contract period.

The power plant will be closed on March 1, 2027.
