What happened

Ferrari, according to the stewards, hindered the Australian’s second fastest lap with a maneuver at turn 1: Piastri had to widen his trajectory and actually give up the attempt, closing the session with the fifth fastest time. The sanction did not surprise Hamilton, who even before the official measure had ‘smelled’ trouble: “At the moment my head is elsewhere. As soon as I closed my lap, I don’t know if I hindered anyone. I’m trying to clarify, I didn’t realize anyone was coming”.

According to the stewards, “in view of turn 1, the number 44 car – Hamilton’s Ferrari – proceeded on the ideal trajectory at a significantly reduced speed while the number 81 car – Piastri’s McLaren – approached in a flying lap”. The verdict was expressed after the analysis of video, telemetry, radio communications and images taken by the on board cameras.

Hamilton’s ‘confession’

Hamilton “explained that he had completed a flying lap and had not received radio messages from the team about the arrival of the number 81 car until the last moment, when the car” of Piastri “was already close. Subsequently” Hamilton “stated that, given his position on the track, the number 81 car was not visible in the mirrors”.
