Retirees are getting more and more expensive. And weigh very heavily on the wallets of working people who see their pay slips cut every month to finance intergenerational solidarity. According to new calculations by two economists, Maxime Sbaihi and Erwann Tison, in 2026, working people will stop getting up in the morning to pay the bill for retirees from May 4. In 1970, the weight of the oldest – who were fewer in number and lived shorter lives – weighed much less: they had to work until February 27 just to pay the bill for intergenerational redistribution.
