Inflation in Austria weakened noticeably in June. According to an initial flash estimate by Statistics Austria, the inflation rate fell to 3.2 percent, after being at 3.7 percent in May. Compared to the previous month, the general price level is expected to remain unchanged, the authority announced on Wednesday.
The main reason for the decline in inflation was Energy price developments. “The 0.5 percentage point lower inflation is primarily due to the fact that fuels, but also heating oil, had a far less price-increasing effect in June than in the previous month,” explained Statistics Austria’s General Director Manuela Lenk. Energy prices rose by a total of 5.4 percent, significantly less than in May when they rose by 9.8 percent.
Biggest Impact on Inflation: Services
Price pressure also eased for food, tobacco and alcohol: this group’s prices rose by 1.5 percent, after 2.2 percent in May. However, the greatest influence on inflation continues to be Services. As in the previous month, they rose in price by 4.4 percent and remain the most significant price driver. Prices for industrial goods rose below average by 1.1 percent. Core inflation was 3.3 percent in June. The final index level and further results for June will be announced on July 17, 2026.
