The Egyptian government increased electricity tariffs for households from August 1, while changing the procedure for subsidies as part of agreements with the International Monetary Fund.
The average price increase was 12%, but since the tariff scale in Egypt consists of 7 steps, the increase was uneven.
Thus, the basic stage – the price of the first 50 kWh – remained unchanged at 68 piastres (1.35 cents) per kWh, 25% of the real cost
The second and third stages increased in price by 21%. At the same time, for households that have reached the third stage, discounts for the first and second stages are canceled, and all consumption is paid at the third stage tariff.
Tariffs for levels 4-6 increased by 11-14%. The 7th stage has risen in price by 6%, and those whose consumption has reached the 7th stage pay at this tariff (274 piastres) for all electricity consumed without government subsidies.
As part of the agreements with the IMF, it is planned to completely phase out electricity subsidies by 2028.
