Villa Dolorosa, adaptation of a play by Chekhov, will be staged for free in 11 states of the country

The companies Caja Negra Producciones and Teatro del Mundo return to the stage with Villa Dolorosa: Three frustrated birthdays, assembly-based work The three sisters, by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov (1860-1904), whose new season will arrive free of charge to 11 entities in the country.

With elements of naturalist, absurd and existentialist theaters, the acid comedy of black humor criticizes bourgeois decadence, the life and thought models of the privileged social class, as well as the search for its meaning today.

“It is a free version by the German playwright Rebekka Kricheldorf, which was adapted and ‘Mexicanized’ by the director Silvia Ortega Vettoret, because it was important for the Mexican viewer to have some known references,” explained the actress and producer Daniela Zavala in interview with The Conference

The project was carried out with the support of the fiscal stimulus of article 190 of the LISR (Efiartes). Our purpose is to decentralize culture and promote love for the performing arts. The spectators will be part of this story, as if they themselves were the protagonists. A unique detail is that most of the 15 functions are free admission.

The cast is made up of Daniela Zavala (Olga), Mahalat Sánchez (Masha), Paula Watson (Irina), José Carriedo (Andrei), Salvador Hurtado (George) and Yuly Moscosa (Janine).

The plot addresses the incoherent and comical experiences of the Freudenbachs, four brothers belonging to the bourgeois class who will face a reality marked by monotony, full of emotional shortcomings and prejudices.

The characters must face the adventures of destiny: one brother wants to be a writer, another wants to finish a degree, someone else is a teacher and when she is promoted to director, the world falls on her. The older sister has to take care of everyone, a typical premise in our societyadded Zavala (Mexico City, 1978).

“They all stay in a villa inherited by their parents, people with a lot of money and quite intelligent. We set the plot with the music of Richard Wagner while the scenery is minimalist and powerful: There is a series of curtains whose splendor transports us to a kind of labyrinth.

“How many times have we tried to maintain balance and suddenly things change? There are situations that from one day to the next make us stagger, debate, think that we can’t take it anymore.

“There are two messages we hope to convey: it is good to have dreams, but you need to work for them, not just keep them in your mind. The other is that despite any inconvenience, the family will always be there despite any adversity, anger, separation, accident, or whatever.

In the end, one ends up returning to one’s origins.concluded Daniela Zavala.
