Death of Bernard Hill, the worthy captain of Titanic

The British actor, who notably played for James Cameron (Titanic) et Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings), died at the age of 79.

He was a great supporting role who brought luck to his directors. The two most famous films in which he starred, Titanic et The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will have won some eleven Oscars, a record. British actor Bernard Hill has died at the age of 79, the BBC announced.

Two compositions marked his career. First that of Captain Edward Smith in Titanic by James Cameron where he played with rare dignity this naval commander who remained until the end at the controls of the liner hit by an iceberg in 1912. Then he received a shower of awards in 2003 and 2004 (Phoenix Film Critics Awards, National Board of Review, Critics Choice, Award, Screen Actors Guild Awards…) for having magnificently portrayed King Théoden in two parts of the Lord of the Rings inspired by the work of Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson.

Bernard Hill was born in Manchester on December 17, 1944. He began his career on the small screen in England in a television film by Mike Leigh, Hard Labour. He honed his skills for ten years in British series before in the 1980s and 90s his strong presence in front of the cameras attracted the seventh art. We will find it in Gandhi (1982) de Richard Attenborough, Le Bounty (1984) de Roger Donaldson, The Shadow and the Prey (1996) by Stephen Hopkins and especially A Midsummer Night’s dream (1999) by Michael Hoffman, inspired by the work of William Shakespeare in which he plays Aegeus.
