Gianni Infantino “pleases” Donald Trump but receives no signals from the White House. The FIFA president is increasingly under pressure after the collapse of the controversial project to open up to private investors. Faced with opposition from UEFA and the strong doubts expressed by the Asian (AFC) and American (Concacaf) confederations, the president of FIFA – according to the New York Post – is seeking the support of the Trump administration to maintain his position at the top of world football.
According to what sources told the newspaper, Infantino has a private telephone conversation scheduled for the day with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Officially, at the center of the conversation would be the role of football as a tool of soft power for the United States. According to sources close to the matter, however, the real objective of the Italian-Swiss leader would be to obtain political support to defend his position. Infantino would in fact feel “isolated” due to the harsh criticism following the failure of the plan, which envisaged entrusting a share of the commercial activities linked to the World Cup to private investors.
The State Department, however, denies everything. Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of state for global public affairs, denies the New York Post’s rumors about X that “he should have checked his sources or… he could have just asked us.”
