After the World Cup, there was a clarifying conversation between national goalkeeper Oliver Baumann and former national coach Julian Nagelsmann about the Hoffenheim player’s demotion. “He was sorry for how everything turned out in the end,” said the 36-year-old Baumann, according to media reports in Seefeld, Austria, where he is currently preparing for the new Bundesliga season with TSG.
“I spoke to Julian ten days ago,” Baumann reported, among others, according to “Bild” and “Kicker”. “We agreed that we would talk on the phone anyway. Then we talked on the phone for almost an hour. I told him everything that was important to me.” However, the conversation was not emotional, “but rather clean. This means that the issue is neatly settled.”
Baumann: “Of course I had to swallow”
A few weeks before the World Cup, Nagelsmann had deprived the veteran, who was originally intended to be number 1, of his regular place. Instead, in the failed tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, he bet on Manuel Neuer from FC Bayern, who had already resigned from the DFB team. But even Neuer couldn’t prevent the bitter exit in the round of 16 against Paraguay, which ultimately cost Nagelsmann his job.
“Of course I had to swallow,” said Baumann about his demotion. “I had this big goal.” At times it wasn’t easy and it took energy. “But I managed to give the team a lot of energy. I think that from my side I have laid the foundation so that nothing stands in the way of success.”
Baumann on Klopp: “Nothing will change for me personally”
Despite the bitter experience, Baumann emphasized that he still had a “very good relationship” with Nagelsmann. “Sporting decisions are then accepted and so the topic is ticked off for me.”
The goalkeeper wants to continue to be available for DFB appearances under the new national coach Jürgen Klopp. “I’m looking forward to everything that comes in the future and looking forward to new tasks. We haven’t had any contact yet, but nothing changes for me personally. I’m here, I’m happy when he gets in touch and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.”
