OpenAI already has more than one billion active users, what is the next step?

The technology company led by Sam Altman has shared the latest steps it has taken in its intention to offer better intelligence, which drives greater adoption and, in turn, generates greater investment that improves intelligence and efficiency.

Within the framework of this initiative, the company has announced that its models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million companies, as it shared in a statement on its blog.

As part of this growth of its user community, OpenAI has referenced measures such as the recent price reduction of its most advanced models, cutting the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80 percent and that of Terra by 20 percent to drive cost efficiency and speed.

In the case of GPT-5.6 Sol, fast mode offers up to 2.5 times the standard processing speed at twice the price, without any change in intelligence.

The technology company has stressed that these types of measures are not simple changes in the price list, but rather “expand the range of services that can be offered and provide customers with greater flexibility to balance intelligence, speed, reliability and cost.”

Likewise, he has pointed out that a more robust model that does the job correctly and efficiently can be, in the long run, cheaper than a cheaper model that requires repeated attempts or more human intervention. “The key is to apply the maximum useful intelligence at the right price,” stated OpenAI, putting this premise on the table as part of its current strategy.

Along with its price adjustment vision, OpenAI has also highlighted the results of its recent engineering work, which has increased “the productivity of each processing unit.”

For example, in collaboration with its technical teams, GPT-5.6 Sol helped optimize the production software used to service its models, reducing end-to-end service costs by 20 percent. Likewise, it also helped improve speculative decoding, increasing token generation efficiency by more than 15 percent.

Along with this, OpenAI has also invested in achieving better routing, smarter context management, more robust tools and better product design that reduces the number of steps required to complete a task.

However, from the technological side they assure that these improvements, which are based on a transversal construction of infrastructure, models, platforms and products, “facilitate access to the next generation of AI” and help make it a technology that increasingly reaches more users, exceeding one billion people active in its services.
