On Monday, May 4, a car drove at high speed through a pedestrian area in the center of Leipzig.
According to Radio Leipzig, a VW SUV drove from Augustusplatz along Grimmaische Strasse through the pedestrian area towards Thomaskirchhof, hitting several people.
A rescue helicopter landed at Augustusplatz.
According to Bild, at least two people were killed and several more were injured.
Police are investigating the incident and the driver’s motives are being established. At the moment, the authorities are not classifying the incident as a terrorist attack.
Lepzpieg Mayor Burkhard Jung told reporters that the driver who hit the people had been detained.
