The area around the central Italian city of Pisa was hit by an earthquake. The city authorities announced on Tuesday that many people, fearing more damage, ran out into the streets. After the earthquake, which occurred around 10:15 a.m., several hundred calls were made to the emergency number 112. So far, there are no reports of injuries or damage.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) announced that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3. The epicenter was located about seven kilometers from Pisa, at a depth of eight kilometers.
Pisa is world famous for the Leaning Tower, which is more than 50 meters high. The first reports from the authorities showed that it was not damaged and is still open to visitors.
Italy is located on the border between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, so the whole country is regularly affected by earthquakes.
Last weekend, a strong earthquake hit the southern Italian city of Naples, the strongest in the last four decades. 26 people were injured in the magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
A protest march was held in Naples on Tuesday, where residents demanded better earthquake protection from the state. Slogans like “Shame on you” could be seen on the banners.
