Erdogan signed a decree on the protection of “traditional values” on TV

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed a decree banning broadcasts on television that are contrary to “traditional Turkish values.” According to the head of state, this measure is designed to protect Turkish culture.

“It is necessary to take all measures to prevent the appearance of television products that have a harmful effect on the family, children, undermine laws and the constitution,” the decree says.

Note that the Turkish authorities have virtually eliminated the free media. The Broadcasting Authority has extensive powers, including the ability to fine or ban channels that broadcast programs with inappropriate content.

However, the presidential decree, which lacks clear criteria, was seen as a sign of the destruction of the remnants of media freedom and the introduction of total censorship. Recall that Turkey already occupied 153 out of 180 places in the press freedom rating.
