La Jornada: Alas y Raíces invites children to a summer of art and play in CDMX and 19 other entities

Summer activities for the little ones will continue this August with the help of institutions and programs such as Alas y Raíces, from the National Coordination of Children’s Cultural Development, which invites babies, children, adolescents and families to encounter art, play and reading in different spaces in Mexico City and 19 other entities.

In its 2026 edition, Onírico Ojos del Bosque proposes a rally immersive that combines physical theater, clown, game and exploration, by the company La Bomba Teatro. The attendees become protagonists of a very special mission: help two forest guardians restore an ancient network that connects trees with other living beings.

These activities will be available for free on Saturdays and Sundays until August 16 in seven venues in the capital: the Social Assistance Center for Second Childhood, the National Center for the Arts, the Scenic Garden, the Faro Oriente, the Library of Mexico, the José María Velasco Gallery, the Community Culture Pavilion and the Luis Enrique Erro Planetarium.

Nature and identity

In turn, Summer of Wings and Roots in the states, which takes place in several entities, presents more than 150 activities designed for a wide variety of interests and contexts. The programming brings together experiences with a wide diversity of artistic and recreational languages ​​through workshops and activities related to local knowledge, native languages, care for nature and community identity. For their part, the General Directorate of Libraries and the National Network of Public Libraries continue with the My Vacations in the Library 2026 programming, which includes 156 activities to enhance the creative capacity of young people.

While the Mexico Library offers courses such as SOS Squad: Save yourself who knows!, in which children learn to act in an emergency; The Vasconcelos Library implements creative workshops, performing laboratories, scientific dissemination experiences and tours of the campus spaces. Meanwhile, the Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico, in collaboration with Alas y Raíces, offers a free program aimed at children in Mexico City, in which, with courses, workshops, shows and concerts, children and their families will be able to get closer to art, science, literature, biodiversity and heritage, through curiosity, play and creativity.

In addition, on this occasion a posthumous tribute will be paid to the sonero maestro Francisco Ramírez Chicolin,instrumentalist, composer and singer, pillar of son jarocho and founding leader of Los Parientes de Playa Vicente, tireless promoter of Veracruz traditions.

The concert that will evoke the musician’s career will be held on August 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the facilities of the Mexican Radio Institute (Imer), with a live broadcast and the participation of the groups Kumaltik, Son de la Ciudad, Mariposa de Hojalata and Los Parientes de Playa Vicente, as well as guest artists.
