How to stop the sharp pain in the leg in the middle of the night – and how to prevent it from returning?

The first thing you can do during a contraction is to gently stretch the muscle. When it comes to the twin muscle, pull the foot towards the body or stand carefully and apply weight to the foot. Gentle massage, local heating or a short walk can help. After that, you should check what contributed to the contraction: abnormal activity, drinking little, inappropriate shoes or sitting for a long time.

Pain that appears when walking and subsides at rest can indicate peripheral vascular disease. In such a situation, the blood flow to the legs is insufficient during exertion, and the person feels pain, cramping, or fatigue in the calf, hip, or buttock while walking. After a short rest the pain improves. It is more common in smokers, diabetics, people with high cholesterol and blood pressure. Such pain is not a normal “tight muscle”, but a possible sign of a problem with the blood vessels.

Nerve pain can appear as burning, stinging, currents, stabbing or electric sensations. It is common in people with diabetes, back problems, B12 deficiency or other nerve damage. Sometimes it gets worse at night because there are fewer distractions. If there is circumcision, weakness, loss of sensation, back pain radiating to the leg or difficulty in walking, an investigation is needed.

There are situations that require an urgent appeal. A sharp pain in one leg with swelling, redness, local heat or tenderness in the calf can indicate a blood clot in a vein, especially after a flight, surgery, immobility, pregnancy, certain pills or a background of coagulopathy. If there is shortness of breath, chest pain or a fast pulse, it is an emergency. A cold, pale or bluish foot with sudden and strong pain also requires an immediate examination.

Growing pains in children is another matter. Children can complain of leg pain in the evening or at night, usually in both legs, without swelling, redness, heat or lameness, and in the morning they function normally. But pain in one leg, lameness, fever, swelling, pain that wakes up repeatedly, weight loss or weakness are not growing pains until they have been checked. In children, it is especially important not to make a reassuring diagnosis too quickly.

What can be done to prevent it? Gentle stretching of the calf muscles before going to bed, moderate physical activity, drinking enough during the day, avoiding prolonged standing without movement, comfortable shoes and drug testing. For people with a sedentary job, getting up and moving during the day can help. If there is swelling, prominent veins or constant pain, it is worth getting checked.

When to see a doctor even without an emergency? When the contractions appear frequently, interfere with sleep, worsen, are accompanied by circumcision or weakness, appear together with back pain, are related to a new medication, or when there are underlying diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease or vascular disease. Investigation may include physical examination, blood tests, vascular evaluation or neurological examination as needed.

Leg pain at night is usually a harmless phenomenon, but it is not always “just a muscle”. The body can wake us up due to a contraction, immobility, an irritated nerve or a blood vessel that does not supply enough blood. The difference is in the pattern: a sharp, short, transient pain is different from pain in one leg with swelling, from pain when walking, or from persistent circumcision. When you listen to the pattern, it’s easier to know when to stretch the muscle and when to schedule a test.
