FIFA official and former star coach Arsène Wenger has distanced himself from Gianni Infantino. Dropping the highly controversial investor deal was “absolutely necessary,” said the Frenchman, who said he knew nothing about the plans: “I was not involved in this strategic plan and only found out about the project through media reports.”
Wenger works at FIFA as director of global football development. Wenger’s comments came after his name appeared in a letter from the European Football Union’s lawyers to Infantino. In it, UEFA asked FIFA to secure the data and communications of 18 executives as potential evidence.
Infantino wanted to sell shares in the world association’s premium products to private investors. Financiers could have acquired around 20 percent of the shares in the newly founded subsidiary FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), whose value was initially put at $20 billion. The FFE would have bundled the commercial rights to FIFA competitions such as the Men’s and Women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup.
