Spotify sees generative AI as a tool to drive retention and create value

Spotify go in the artificial intelligence (AI) a tool with which to boost user retention and generate value, both through personalized suggestions in real time and interaction in natural language and internally in programming work.

The technology company is committed to the application of artificial general intelligence, facing the creation of cutting-edge AI models, to personalize the user experience in real time.

This is materialized with Large Taste Model (MLP), Spotify’s proprietary model that has been trained with “trillions of behavioral signals and years of user interaction data across music, podcasts, and audiobooks” to drive content recommendations with “generation and personalization in real time.”

This was explained by the technology company during the celebration of ‘Investor Day 2026’, and has even assured that this approach is already “generating measurable improvements in interaction.”

Thus, he states that they have detected that songs with autoplay are saved 9 percent longer and that podcast discovery from the home page has improved by another 9 percent.

Generative AI has also been extended to interaction as well, as Spotify offers users tools such as DJs, playlists with suggestions, and taste profiles, allowing them to express in natural language what they want to hear.

In this sense, AI is seen as a tool to deepen retention and offer premium experiences and personalized add-ons to the most active users, allowing them to justify a tiered pricing model.

Internally, AI has been implemented as a support tool for Spotify engineers, as with ‘Honk’, a coding agent that automates maintenance tasks and helps engineers work faster.

According to the company, More than 73 percent of code contributions are AI-assisted, and AI-powered workflows are reducing the time needed to prototype, test, and validate new ideas across the enterprise.
