Digitalization of European SMEs between the digital divide and the push of artificial intelligence

The digitalisation of European small and medium-sized businesses shows a two-speed picture, characterized by a large infrastructural delay and a simultaneous acceleration in advanced technologies. According to data from the Year in Review 2025 by team.blue, a group active in digital services in twenty-three European markets, Sixty-five percent of the continent’s SMEs still lack basic digital solutions. At the same time, the demand for tools based on artificial intelligence is experiencing a significant increase among companies that have already started the digital transition. During 2025, products equipped with AI functionality showed a growth rate double that of the traditional offer, generating approximately half of the annual recurring revenues deriving from new customers for the group, which serves over three million three hundred thousand businesses and is present in Italy with brands such as Register, Etinet, Keliweb, iubenda and Accessiway.


AI integration is extending from website and application creation processes to customer service and marketing data management, moving towards interoperable standards such as the Model Context Protocol to enable automated product management via external agents

The consolidation of these skills was also supported by strategic operations such as the acquisitions of Macaly, a vibe coding platform, and Windsor.ai, specialized in data integration

In the current landscape, the online presence of companies is evolving from simple domain registration and hosting, an area that represents seventy-three percent of the group’s turnover, towards integrated SaaS architectures for regulatory compliance, e-commerce, engagement and financial transaction management.
