Supreme Court rejects Trump’s appeal against his conviction for sexual assault

The US Supreme Court has refused to hear US President Donald Trump’s appeal against a lower court verdict ordering him to pay writer Elizabeth Jean Carroll five million dollars for sexually assaulting her.

“This decision affirms the verdict of the jury, which unanimously found that President Trump committed sexualized violence and then tried to smear Carroll. His numerous attempts to challenge the conviction failed. Today, the Supreme Court put an end to Trump’s attempts to avoid responsibility for his actions,” said the author’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan.

The initial verdict was rendered by the court in May 2023. Carroll alleged that Donald Trump raped her in the fitting room of a Bergdorf Goodman store in New York in the fall of 1995 or spring of 1996. According to the book she published, Trump pushed her against a wall, began kissing her, and then forced her into sexual intercourse.

A Manhattan federal court jury did not find the incident to be rape. At the same time, they ruled that the victim was entitled to compensation and awarded $2.02 million for the attack and $2.98 million for subsequent attempts to smear her.

Note that in another case, the Manhattan Federal Court sentenced Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million.
