Shakira talks about the scars from Gerard Pique’s betrayal

Almost two years have passed since Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced to the world a dramatic separation in 2022, after 11 years of marriage. This breakup, which came along with reports of the actor’s alleged infidelity with his current partner, Clara Chia Marti, quickly became a high-profile telenovela. Now, in an interview with People magazine, the star talks about the heartbreak she experienced and the same scars that the ex left behind.

“I always thought I was fragile or weaker than what life has shown me,” Shakira admitted in an interview, but she makes sure to make it clear that she is full of gratitude for the life lessons she received: “Even to people who leave you with scars, because they simply make us better.”

She channeled the enormous pain she went through to the place she knows best in the world – the recording studio. In 2023, she released her famous revenge song (“Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”), which directly stung Fika and his infidelity, which became a huge hit that put her in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in over a decade. “It was simply pure catharsis, I really had to write about what I went through and not censor anything,” Shakira explained, appreciating the process, “like going to a psychologist, only cheaper.”

Beyond music, what kept her going during the time when her world collapsed were friends, family and of course – motherhood. “Life is hard, but it’s so worth it because friends are there for you,” she said about dealing with the difficult breakup.

Today, the singer lives in Miami together with her two sons with Pika, Milan (13) and Sasha (11), after the three left Spain and left the past behind. “When your world collapses, you have to get up and pay the bills and still make breakfast and take your children to school. Life must go on,” she described the new reality as a single mother, adding that “motherhood makes you strong.” “From the moment I became a mother, I saw life from a different perspective,” she shared excitedly, “My children are not only the best thing that happened to me, but I learn a lot from them every day.”

What about new love? Although her name has recently been linked to basketball player Jimmy Butler, Shakira is currently focused solely on the two boys in her life. “I’m just thinking about raising my children. I don’t see it happening right now,” she admitted when asked about a future relationship, “maybe when they grow up.”
