God of War creators reassure fans: Kratos isn’t finished, but Faye deserves her own story

After yesterday’s announcement of God of War Laufey on PlayStation State of Play, fans immediately had two burning questions: what is the protagonist’s name – and is Kratos done for good?

The answer to both questions came quickly.

“She’s not like a singer”

IGN was among the first to point this out – God of War’s Laufey and Icelandic singer Laufey share the same name, but not the pronunciation. The singer is pronounced “LAY-vay” (or not authentically Icelandic: “Löivei”), while the protagonist of the game is pronounced differently according to the studio – closer to the Norwegian source, approximately “LOW-fay”. It didn’t help that as many as four different journalists on the same IGN video said the name in four completely different ways, which only further fueled the chaos in the comments.

Faye, for those who don’t follow the series, is the real name of Kratos’ late wife – known to the game as just “Faye” – whose full name is Laufey the Fair, a giant warrior from Jötunheim and the original owner of the Leviathan axe.

A Kratos?

Santa Monica Studio was also clear about that: Kratos is not finished. Cory Barlog, creative director of the studio, described Kratos as the heart of the franchise, and Faye as one of the branches that the studio wants to develop in parallel. The studio’s official Twitter profile posted a brief message to fans: “Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him. For now, we’re excited to take fans on a journey through the afterlife of the gods with Faye.”

Game director Ariel Lawrence added that she didn’t expect the studio to move away from Kratos as a primary focus either – but that Faye’s story was too important to leave unspoken. Comparisons with the Marvel Extended Universe moreć circling the gaming community.

There is no release date yet, but the game is open for wishlisting on the PlayStation Store.
