From the “elimination” of Putin to the “historic turning point” of the EU

On Monday, international newspapers wrote about the war in Ukraine:

truth (Bucharest):

“Only Putin’s elimination could avert the danger of a generalized war. His generals and political camarilla have certainly come to the same conclusion. Secret talks with NATO’s secret services are probably being held these days to calm the situation in a post-Putin situation -era.(…) The members of the Russian political and military elite also have families, children and grandchildren. They have no inclination to collective suicide. It is only a matter of days before this elite will depose Putin, peacefully or violently .”

Financial Times (London):

“Putin’s war looks more and more like a miscalculation. But that could make it even more dangerous. Despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreeing to talks at the Belarusian border, Putin put his strategic nuclear forces on high alert on Sunday.

The strength of the Ukrainian resistance partly reflects the rebuilding of the Ukrainian military since 2014. It is no longer the resource-poor, ragtag force that was caught off guard by Russian aggression in Crimea and Donbass. (…)

Putting its nuclear forces on alert to intimidate the West is a dangerous escalation by a leader who has made Russia’s nuclear doctrine even more ominous since the Soviet era. However, a hasty subjugation of its neighboring country would also have posed the danger that an emboldened Putin might try to go further. The world is in a dangerous phase. The Ukrainians are teaching her a lesson in bravery.”

Wall Street Journal (Washington):

“Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine invasion is not going according to his script, and the world owes that to the heroic people of this beleaguered country of 41 million. Their defiance against terrifying dangers is an inspiration and has roused the world to the threat of the… Kremlin autocrats. Ukraine deserves more support to pump up the price of war for Mr. Putin, with guns, the toughest sanctions and global ban. (…)

Much is at stake in this war, including for American interests. Mr. Putin is trying to restore Greater Russia and make it the dominant European state and a global power. He wants a new world disorder. If he succeeds in Ukraine, NATO will be his next target. The people of Ukraine show an overly smug West what it means to fight for freedom.”

The standard (Brussels):

“Germany’s turning point is particularly steeped in history. After 30 years trying to build bridges between Russia and Europe through trade, it is supplying weapons for use against Russian soldiers 75 years after the end of World War II.

Did Putin underestimate the Ukrainian resistance and the united determination of Europe? As cold-blooded as he announced the invasion, he fiercely put the nuclear forces on high alert on Sunday. The fact is that, despite the enormous tensions and upheavals, Europe has repeatedly shown that unity in a deep crisis is the ultimate goal. (…)

As frighteningly uncertain as the future may be, it is no longer possible to do business with this regime. The rift is irreparable. Putin has declared himself an enemy.”
